VIN VERIFICATIONS


When applying for a title on a motor vehicle previously titled or registered in another state or country, the VIN on the actual motor vehicle must be checked to ensure that the vehicle is the same as the one described on the proof of ownership. Verification performed at any of our six locations will be subject to weather conditions as a matter of safety for our staff and customers.

The VIN must be physically inspected by one of the officials listed below, using the VIN verification form, unless the verification is being performed by an out of state dealer.


Motor Vehicles Previously Titled/Registered Out-of-State

The VIN verification for vehicles previously titled out-of-state can be completed by one of the following:

  • Tax Collector Employee (service may not be available during severe weather conditions)
  • Florida Notary
  • Florida DMV Compliance Examiner/Inspector
  • Law Enforcement Officer (local Lee County law enforcement agencies currently unable to provide this service)
  • Out-of-State motor vehicle dealer (must be on dealership letterhead - see sample)
  • Provost Marshall; Active Duty Commissioned/Warrant Officer; Legalman (rank of E7 or higher)


Motor Vehicles Previously Titled/Registered Out-of-Country

The VIN verification for vehicles previously titled out-of-country must be completed by a DMV Compliance Examiner/Inspector. Please call 941.723.4551 to schedule an appointment.


Vehicles Exempt From VIN Verification

The following types of vehicles are exempt from VIN verification requirements:

  • New vehicles (proof of ownership is a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin)
  • Vehicles currently titled in Florida (proof of ownership is Florida title)
  • Mobile homes
  • Trailers with a net weight of less then 2,000 pounds
  • Travel trailers
  • Camp trailers
  • Truck campers
  • Fifth wheel recreational trailers
